Toy Poodles - Breed History

France is the Poodle's acknowledged mother country. It is believed that the breed might have originated in Germany, Denmark, or other countries. However, France is the only country that prides itself in having the official title of the Poodle native country.

Poodles were bred as gun dogs and were often used to retrieve waterfowl. They were agile and smart. Diversity of the clips is due to breeders' desire both to protect the dog while it was in cold water and ease the task of swimming. Dense coat in some parts of the body did not allow the dog to become too cold. Meanwhile, short hairs on the legs did not prevent movement.

Toy Poodles - Functions

As a matter of fact, the Toy Poodle appeared in the United States at the end of the 19th century. However, the breed population was not great until after the World War II. At the second half of the 20th century, the Toy Poodle acquired popularity.

Nowadays, there are three versions of the Poodle: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. They are considered one breed and are judged with the same criteria in mind but for the size. Toy Poodles are used mostly as companion dogs.
