Toy Poodles should be acquired from reputable breeders. Experience is of vital importance in the breeding business. Breeders should be knowledgeable on the breed specifics and care requirements. It is recommended to ask for references and to check veterinary papers. Both the sire and the dam should be tested for hereditary diseases. Puppies should receive early socialization and shots.
The average litter size in the Toy Poodle is about 2-5 puppies. All of them are cute and seem to have a great potential. Make sure the puppies come from the parent dogs with sound temperaments. It should be kept in mind that some bloodlines are likely to be snappish or high-strung. These qualities are discouraged in the Toy Poodle.
To determine if the sire and the dam are overall sound, ask the breeder to have a look at the dogs. It may be that the sire is not available. The best solution is to view the pictures of the dogs and, probably, videos.
If you are not planning to show your future dog in the show ring, you may not want a top quality puppy. Note that the price of a puppy with a show potential is not small. It is wise to acquire a pet quality puppy at a lower price. The main thing to remember is that the puppy should be healthy. Give preference to breeders who are registered in one of the breed clubs.
